The first car that I want to talk about from Detroit is the Mazda Furai Concept.Meaning „the sound of the wind,, and carrying a slogan that says:The soul of a sports car,this four wheel wonder stuns people at its every appearence.Through this concept the Japanese manufacturer celebrates 40 years of motorsport hystory and also 40 years since the rotory engine first powered a Mazda.Under the hood we find a 450 HP ethanol burning engine developed by BP,while the chassis came out of the Courage C65 model,the same one that ran at the American LeMans Series in 2005 and 2006.

The design is inspired by the Nagare design language,that will be the base of the next Mazda models.Similar design lines had been seen in the past at several models: Mazda Nagare concept, Mazda Ryuga, Mazda Hakaze and Mazda Taiki(the Tokyo Auto Show star).

Unfortunately the Furai will never mass produced.

Fisker Karma Hybrid

There were a lot of hybrid cars revealed at this year’s Detroit Auto Show. On of those cars is Fisker Automotive plug-in hybrid, which is set to be delivered starting 2009. Maybe you are wondering were does its name come from, well, Fisker is the namesake of Danish-born Henrik Fisker (CEO at BWM  and Aston Martin designer). This model can go up to 50 miles before the gas engine kicks in to charge the lithium-ion batteries. It sports a 150mph top speed and it’s able to reach 60 mph in just 5.8 seconds.

150mpg plug-in hybrid XH-150 SUV

Another interesting hybrid form Detroit Auto Show is the 150mpg plug-in hybrid XH-150 SUV from AFS Trinity Power Corporation. Why is so special ? Well, this car is different from the traditional hybrids the XH-150’s powertrain uses ultra-capacitors, not gas. It goes from 0 to 60 in 6.9 seconds with a top highway speed of just 87mph. Anyway, AFS Trinity is more focused on licensing their ultra-capacitor technology than to bring the XH-150 to market.

Here are some new features :

• In-floor Storage:
• Dual and quad headlamps: High-efficiency, dual-filament halogen headlamp bulbs with more light per watt than traditional headlamps, an average life of 3,000 hours, and inexpensive replacement cost. A polycarbonate clear lens is impact-resistant.
• Electronic Stability Program (ESP): uses selective braking and engine control to try to keep the vehicle’s intended course.
• Exterior Mirrors: new turn signal lamps and puddle lamps integrated into outside mirror housing (not available on ST), new memory function (Laramie only), new body-color finish (Sport) and new chrome finish (Laramie). Power and heat functions also available, depending on trim level.
• Glove boxes: An upper glove box provides 391 cubic inches of storage capacity, and combined with the lower glove box volume of 426 cubic inches (!), provides best-in-class glove-box volume
• Automatic Headlamps
• Bed Rail Caps: Top covers for cargo-box bed sides that reduce box marring and scratching
• Center console: With a floor-mounted automatic transmission shifter and standard Electronic Range Select.
• Cargo light: Better “box lighting” and a separate on/off switch
• Doors: The door includes a wiring harness on a plastic carrier, which is also a water shield for the interior trim. The integrated foam seal reduces traffic noise intrusion.
• Door weatherstripping: The first weatherstrip, in the greenhouse area, closes the gap to the door opening, cutting wind noise. The second is a full-circumference door-mounted seal. The third is a full-circumference body-mounted watertight seal.
• Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC): Redesigned controls are mounted on steering wheel. Functions include compass, outside temperature, average fuel economy, distance to empty, trip elapsed time, and system preferences.
• Exhaust: Chrome-tipped dual exhaust for 5.7-liter vehicles, with radiused cutouts integrated into rear bumper
• Express Up/down Windows: for Quad Cab and Ram Crew 1500
• Fog Lamps: Halogen bulbs distribute light through ultraviolet- and abrasion-resistant, coated polycarbonate lenses. High-efficiency halogen bulbs provide excellent road coverage, with a low wide-beam that illuminates the area immediately ahead of the truck
• Heated Steering Wheel: Activated either by a switch on the lower switch bank or by the remote start function. When the temperature attains a preset level, the heat function shuts off. Steering wheel is available with urethane or leather-grip surface.
• HVAC: Dual-zone automatic temperature control
• Memory System: Programmable memory switches store and recall personal settings for up to two drivers, covering outside mirrors, driver seat, adjustable pedals, and radio control presets

• Seats: Features include industry-first heated and ventilated seats covered in YES® Essentials stain resistant, odor resistant, anti-static seat fabric or improved leather. Also new for 2009 is the addition of rear heated seats available on the crew cab.

• SIRIUS Backseat TV™: A segment first, it offers three channels of children’s programming commercial-free 24 hours a day. Can play satellite streaming video and audio at the same time
• Tailgate: All-new, one-piece, fold-over stamping with new lift-assist that releases tension created when the tailgate is lowered to help raise it for closing
• Taillamps: New two-bulb units use acrylic lenses with optical reflectors to distribute light. The dual-filament upper bulb provides stop lamp, turn signal, taillamp, and side-marker lamp functions. The lower bulb provides the backup lamp function in the lower half of the lens.
• Trailer Hitch: Redesigned Class IV trailer hitch attachment to frame
• Wireless Ignition Node (WIN): Panel-mounted node replaces the conventional key cylinder mounted on the steering column
