 Nissan Cube 2009

Price starting from: £9000 (est)

On Sale: Winter

Why so Great ? Unique design statement, funky looks

Nissan has long been to sell the Cube outside Japan. Now, with a new model being launched this year, it looks like we’ve finally going to get it .

Since it was introduced to the Japanese market in 1998, the Cube’s asymmetrical design has made it a real head-turner. However, problems converting it to left-hand drive have made it uneconomical to bring to Europe – until now.

People have been falling in love with its looks and importing current-generation cars privately, so Nissan has decided to ensure that the new model can be adapted to make it adoptable for all markets.

Nissan Cube 2009Expect the car to swiftly achieve cult  status: going global has done nothing to dampen its quirky character or design and the 1.3 litre and 1.5 litre engines it is expected to have should be more than men enough for the job.

VW Polo 2009

Price starting from: £8000 (est)

On Sale: Winter

Why so Great ? Classy image, interior quality, residual value

The new Volkswagen Polo’s launch is so secret even company insiders are reduced to talking in whispers when releasing snippets of informations. While that doesn’s give us much to go on, it does hint at the level of expectation surrounding the car.

What we do know is that VW is tackling the Polo’s shortcomings head-on. VW Polo 2009. The current car may benefit from a wide engine range and cushy ride, but it is held back by an uninspiring drive, bland cabin and high price tags.

Although nobody is expecting prices to drop, you should get a lot more for your money. The new VW Polo will be based on the same underpinnings as Seat’s Ibiza, which handles and rides pretty well.

Styling is expected to follow along the same lines as the Golf Mk VI, which means an evolution of the familiar rather than something too radical.

VW Polo 2009 The engine range will get an overhaul, with VW’s cleaner, more powerful units being introduced, including the 1.4-litre TFSI petrol motor and the new 1.6 turbo-diesel.

A Bluemotion version of the car is rumored to be powered by 1.2 TDI, with emissions of just 89g/km of CO2. However, this is likely to follow a few months after the initial launch pushing it into 2010.

VW Polo 2009A 1.0 petrol could go on sale as part of VW’s eco-drive, although such a unit was originally thought to be reserved for the Up city car project, in the pipeline for 2011 or beyond. VW’s double-clutch DSG gearbox is also expected to be offered on some models, reducing emissions and fuel consumption further, and giving the car a sportier feel.

 Daihatsu Charade 2009

Price starting from: £6995 (est)

On Sale: February

Why so Great ? Surprising amount of kit and space, ultra-low running costs

Given the current financial climate, Daihatsu has timed the launch of its new Charade 2009 well.

The latest car is due to arrive in February and promises to update a successful formula. Like its predecessor, the Daihatsu Charade 2009 will have more interior space and equipment than you might expect and will come with a spirited three-cylinder engine.

Daihatsu Charade 2009 – This time around the 1.0-litre unit should be good for 68bhp, but most impressively it should average around 64mpg, with CO2 emissiions of just 104g/km.

Prices and equipment levels have yet to be confirmed, but the cheapest model is likely to dip just under the  £7000 barrier when it appears early this year.

In line with the previous model, even the basic trim should come with air-conditioning and remote central locking as standard. Safety equipment is certain to be a strong point, too. Because the high-specification Japanese versions already on sale  are available with sever airbags – including one for the driver’s knees – and stability control.

Overall, the  Daihatsu Charade 2009 is an affordable and reliable car for City runs and mini fans.

Alfa Romeo Mito 2009

Price starting from: £10975-£14975 (est)

On Sale: January

Why so Great ? Cool,stylish looks,compact dimensions-it’s different

The Mito isn’t your standard-issue supermini-it takes many of its styling cues from Alfa Romeo’s 8C Competizione supercar, so it looks great.

We’ve tested the Mito and are happy to report its striking beauty isn’t just skin deep. There are some attractive materials in the cabin and it feels well bolted together inside.

Alfa Romeo Mito 2009 – Straightline performance isn’t as earth-shattering as that of the 8C, but indications are that the Mito handles corners well. It also benefits from a range of five peppy engines that will all the available from launch.

2009 Alfa Romeo Mito – If you want a five-door version, you can’t have one – that role will be played by the replacement for the 147 small family car, which arrives at the other end of the 2009.

Remember, Mito is pronounced ‘Mi’ as in ‘Milano’ with To as in “Torino”. Simple.
