Close-up of the 2008 GMC Yukon Hybrid
Full hybrids have to date been almost synonymous with Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive (HSD) system, which, in addition to being the technology behind all Toyota and Lexus hybrids, is licensed by Nissan for its Altima Hybrid and is used in a modified version by Ford in the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner hybrids. This hybrid monopoly is about to change, however, as GM readies its 2-Mode hybrid system for introduction later this year in the Yukon Hybrid and Tahoe Hybrid SUVs. Like HSD, GM’s 2-Mode system enables cars to run just on electricity, just on gasoline, or a mixture of the two. The system makes use of a two electrically controlled variable transmission (ECVT) modes, which change based on the car’s speed and engine demand. The result, according to GM, is a 40 percent improvement in city fuel economy over the gasoline-only Yukon, and a 25 percent improvement in overall gas mileage.
We took a ride along with GM this week in the 2008 Yukon Hybrid and got a first-hand impression of the next big thing in the hybrid world.

The Frankfurt Auto show hysteria has started. All the manufactures are preparing the ground for their models which will be presented at the show by revealing pictures and informations of their newest creations. It looks like the waiting time for Aston Martin fans ended.
After rising interest when it appeared in the new James Bond movie-Casino Royale, the gorgeous DBS coupe unveils itself at the end of this week at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
The new Aston Martin is the same as the DB9 and even the same engine but greatly improved. The 6 litre V12 has an air scoop that only opens at 5500 rpm for a better ventilation and a better intake to ensure the optimum air-fuel mixture. The transmission is a six speed manual.
As expected, the HP is as impressive as the V12-510 horses ready to eat the road with all the 570 Nm of torque. Zero to sixty mph in 4.3 sec. is very good considering the overall weight of just 1695 kg. Top speed is 302 km\h. The whole car is practicaly made of carbon fiber to lose some weight.
All that power needs to be controlled. And Aston Martin put on this model all new ceramic brakes. And what could go better with the new brakes that the brand-new shock monitoring system called Adaptive Damping System? This system controles ground clearence and improved handling. The 20 inch rims rapped in Pirelli 295 tires complete the aggressive look.
Fans will have to wait until the new model will hit the road, in the first 3 months of 2008.
BMW added all-wheel drive to 3-series coupe

Reports are coming in that BMW will be launching an all-wheel-drive 335xi Coupe sometime in the first half of next year. It will be the first time all four wheels will be powered on a 3-Series coupe, and the car will stand as a direct competitor to Audi’s A5 Quattro coupe. Being coupled with BMW’s 300-hp twin-turbo inline-six means the 335xi Coupe can reach 60 mph in 5.2 seconds for the manual version (0.1 second quicker than the RWD model) and 5.3 seconds for the automatic (0.2 seconds quicker than the RWD model). It turns out the additional traction more than compensates for the extra weight of BMW’s xDrive AWD system. We hear the base price will be $42,600, which we assume is in USD since it falls right above the $40,800 starting price of the 335i (shown) in the U.S.
